Recommendations

To fully enjoy the Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, it is highly recommended to spend at least two days acclimatizing in Cusco before beginning the trek. The trail reaches high elevations, and proper acclimatization helps reduce the effects of altitude.

Wear comfortable trekking clothing in layers, as temperatures can vary significantly between daytime and nighttime in the Andes. A waterproof jacket or rain poncho is essential, especially during the rainy season.

Travelers should bring sturdy hiking boots with good grip, since the trail includes original Inca stone steps, steep sections, and uneven terrain. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are also important due to the strong Andean sun.

Carry a small backpack with personal essentials, such as water, snacks, a camera, and extra clothing. Trekking poles can also be helpful for stability during steep ascents and descents.

Because permits for the Inca Trail are limited, it is strongly recommended to book the tour several months in advance to secure availability.
